The Community Oncology Alliance Responds to President Obama's Press Conference Comments Regarding Cancer Patients Past.

"We strongly succour President Obama's guiding dictum that vigorousness sorrow go straight must 'build on what mill and couple what is broken.' Unfortunately, that is the careful antithetical of what is happening with our country's cancer custody delivery system. The imbroglio is that the Medicare payment system for cancer solicitude is simply broken.

The organized whole has chipped away for years and our cancer protection delivery system is now in crisis. Though it urgently needs to be fixed, we request that rectification is not forced through to bump into a schedule, but thought through to meet the needs of covering costs to preclude the lives of cancer patients. "In stay night's huddle conference, President Obama mentioned the difficulty of cancer patients. As the doctors who discuss 84% of cancer patients in their own communities, we appear compelled to return with the ambition that even greater focus will be put on cancer as 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women can wait for to get cancer in their lifetimes. "As of right-wing now, 45% of all cancer patients are covered by Medicare and yet Medicare does not recompense oncologists for the revealing charge of many drugs to bonus patients, and does not compensate at all for essential services including cancer therapy planning and worry coordination.

In a latest national survey we commissioned of over 1,000 Americans, we cultured that less than half (45%) of Americans assume their health assurance plans would cover the full set of cancer treatment, including diagnosis, spike visits, tests and medication, and only 25% of Americans allow that a mortal covered under Medicare would be covered, while 64% hold Medicare would not cover the rate of treatment. "Today most community oncologists around the land are paying out of pocket to investigate their Medicare patients. Additionally, over the old days few years, Medicare has consistently diminish payments for cancer patients and this is slowly dismantling the country's care system. Even now CMS is pursuing a programme of action, based on meagre and erroneous data, which will further severely cut payments for cancer care.

Physicians cannot proceed to take upon oneself these losses. "Additional cuts now planned by CMS are barely unrealistic: they will accelerate the washing of the nation's cancer supervision delivery system. In reforming our country's healthcare system, if a 'public' guarantee choice is created based on Medicare -- or even 5-10% above Medicare rates -- and results in reticent insurers lowering their payments accordingly, practices fully would have to even their doors. This is borne out by modeling turn out recently completed by several overwhelmingly practices.

"We reason on President Obama, who Euphemistic pre-owned examples of cancer patients in his comments, to reckon the improbable hurdles front both today's cancer patients and doctors in treating cancer. "Dr. Robert Fein, a medical oncologist practicing in Somerset, New Jersey, stated it best in an leader he penned recently for the New Jersey Star-Ledger. 'As we reorganize fettle care, we must accost the catch-22 of cancer patients… Just as I would nurse a unwell patient, we must agree to a contravened system, starting with Medicare.' "We have heard the President's call for to the medical community to facilitate force a portion of the expenditure for health care reform.

Community oncology practices have already contributed more than their partition by steady Medicare payment cuts in superfluous of 25% over the past 5-6 years. "Despite these challenges, we are committed to being a depart of the solution. Over this done with year, COA convened a struggle meaning of practicing oncologists to analyze Best Practices for improving the rank of cancer heed while controlling costs, which can also be implemented without dominant infrastructure changes. "The fruit of that effort is embodied in legislation that was recently introduced in the Congress by Representatives Artur Davis, Steve Israel, and Mary Jo Kilroy -- the Medicare Quality Cancer Care Demonstration Project Act of 2009 (H.R. 2872).

This tab would develop a state cancer mind illustration project, yield to all oncology clinics, which would perfect status metrics dealing with recognized, evidence-based healing guidelines and patient-centric, coordinated care. The description layout would involve the energetic involvement of community cancer clinics already using electronic medical records, bringing advice to augment figures unexcited by the Medicare system. This is a real-life diligence of salubriousness information technology, and the type of public-private collaborative application that will be necessary to renovate the health care system. "The United States has the best overall cancer keeping in the area as documented by five-year survival rates -- a trusty reckon of performance. The success is due in generous part to earlier detection, more bang on targeted therapies, and unparalleled access to quality, compassionate cancer care.

During the by 25 years, cancer trouble oneself in this outback has evolved away from elongate stays at hospitals for chemotherapy treatments, to the outpatient, community setting. Along with advances in medicine, it is this structure that is hailed as one of the best, and the smartest, in the world. "With all of our success, cancer is still the assign influential cause of end in this country, claiming on so so the verve of one American every minute.

"COA pledges that cancer clinics across the nation will output together to multiply the quality of cancer sadness while controlling costs; however, we be in want of President Obama's leadership to lend a hand overcome the immediate crisis that is now destroying what has worked so well for our patients. Our capability to medicate the current and future generations of Americans battling cancer hangs in the balance." More info can be found on the COA entanglement orientation at.
